About Us

Dear Carolinas HealthCare System Employee:

Welcome to CarolinaCARE, your mail-order pharmacy owned and operated by Carolinas Healthcare System. The mail-order program continues to be a mandatory benefits plan design for maintenance medications. CarolinaCARE partners with WHI, a subsidiary of Walgreens, to allow you to use your pharmacy of choice for the new prescriptions. A total of three fills (the original plus two refills) may be obtained from local retail pharmacies such as Rite-Aid, CVS, Walgreens, etc. For added cost savings, you may also receive the initial fills from CHS owned retail pharmacies (see the list below). After a maximum of 3 fills, your prescription must be transferred to the CarolinaCARE mail-order program or you will be required to pay the full cost out-of-pocket. We intend to provide you with the highest level of customer service to meet your pharmacy needs.

You play an important part in making sure your experience in getting prescription drugs runs smoothly. Here are a few tips to help ensure a positive outcome for you and your covered dependents:

Timely submission of Prescription Requests

After three (3) fills of a maintenance medication, you must use the CarolinaCARE medial order feature. To take advantage of cost-savings sooner than the third fill, ask your physician for two written prescriptions – a 30-day authorization to be filled at your local retail pharmacy, along with a 90-day prescription to send immediately to CarolinaCARE.

Prescriptions for mail order may be requested in four (4) ways:

  • online through the internet at the CarolinaCARE website (www.carolinacarerx.org)
  • by calling locally (704-512-6800) or toll-free(1-866-697-6800) and using the automated telephone system.
  • by calling locally (704-512-6800) or toll-free (1-866-697-6800), and speaking with a Member Service representative.
  • by mail using the mail order form that is available online at www.carolinacarerx.org

The CarolinaCARE mail-order pharmacy will allow you to:

  • Select from a variety of payment options - including check, money order, credit/debit card, GEMpay (payroll deduction where available), or Flexible Spending Account debit card.
  • Save money by reducing co pays for prescriptions filled through CarolinaCARE.
  • Submit your prescription refills via website, telephone, or mail and have the prescription conveniently delivered to your home or post office box.
  • Choose to fill a 30- or 90- day supply of your mail-order maintenance medications.
Did you know….You will be responsible for paying the entire cost of a brand name drug if you choose it when a generic is available? Discuss all drug alternatives with your physician or pharmacist – ask if a generic is available and appropriate. This opens the communication with your physician and potentially allows you the opportunity to save money.

CarolinaCARE Mission Statement

To create and operate a comprehensive medication delivery system for employees and their families that provides quality pharmaceutical care in a prompt but accurate, highly efficient, courteous, and confidential manner, and at a competitive cost to both consumers and the Carolinas HealthCare System.
